"The Phat 5" nickname comes from the P-H-A-T acronym that means "Producing History At the Tournament" (Final Four) for the 5 "Greatest" college basketball programs of All-Time.

November 6, 2006: The Associated Press Pre-season Top 25. All 5 of "The Phat 5" were ranked N. Carolina #2, Kansas #3, UCLA #6, Duke #11, and Kentucky #22.
November 17, 2006: John R. Wooden the legendary coach of the UCLA Bruins was one of the 5 members inducted into the founding class of the National Collegiate Hall of Fame. He was joined by Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Dean Smith (UNC), and Dr. James Naismith (Kansas)
November 21, 2006: "Phat 5" vs. "Phat 5" UCLA defeated Kentucky 73-68 during the semi-final round of the Maui Invitational Tournament. The Bruins would beat Georgia Tech 88-73 to win the Maui Championship.
November 25, 2006: Kansas beat the #1 ranked Florida Gators 82-80 for the Vegas Invitational Championship. It was the first loss of the new season for Florida.
December 2, 2006: In a battle of the 2 winningest programs in NCAA basketball history the N. Carolina Tar Heels beat Kentucky at home 75-63 in the second "Phat 5" vs. "Phat 5" match-up of the season.
December 9, 2006: UNC coach Roy Williams won his 500th game vs. High Point 94-69. Williams is the fastest coach in NCAA history to 500 wins compiling a 500-125 record in 625 games. He joined Dean Smith and Frank McGuire as UNC coaches with 500 victories.
December 19, 2006: Tuesday Dec. 19, 2006 will be remembered as "Phat 5 Tuesday" as all "Phat 5" programs would play and surpass the 9,100 combined wins total. They entered the day with 9,099 combined wins as all 5 would win for a total of 9,104 wins. Kentucky beat Santa Clara 74-60, UNC 105-52 over Florida Atlantic, UCLA 75-51 over Sam Houston, Kansas 94-43 over Winston Salem, and Duke 79-72 over Kent St.
January 1, 2007: Texas Tech coach Bobby Knight passes Dean Smith (UNC) on the NCAA All-Time winningest coach list with his 880th win over New Mexico 70-68. He also passed Adolph Rupp (UK) along the way.
January 20, 2007: Kansas would be upset on the road by Texas Tech 69-64. The victory over the 5th ranked Jayhawks would be the biggest win for the Red Raiders during the season.
January 20, 2007: N. Carolina defeats Georgia Tech 77-61 and becomes only the second program in NCAA history with 1,900 wins (Kentucky has the most All-Time).
February 7, 2007: "Phat 5" vs. Phat 5" N. Carolina visited the Duke Blue Devils in the first of their 2 regular-season meetings. UNC defeated Duke 79-73.
February 10, 2007: Kentucky lost to #1 Florida at home 64-61. The loss to the Gators was the start of a 3-game losing streak that began a downward spiral on the rest of the Wildcats season.
February 12, 2007: The Duke Blue Devils fell out of the Top 25 polls for the first time in 200 weeks, 11-consecutive years since the end of the 1995-96 season. The 200 weeks is second All-Time to UCLA's 221 weeks. N. Carolina is third with 172 weeks in the polls.
March 3, 2007: Kansas beat Texas and freshman phenom Kevin Durant 90-86 to win the regular-season Big 12 Championship.
March 4, 2007: N. Carolina hosted "Phat 5" member Duke and handed the Blue Devils an 86-72 defeat to win the ACC regular-season Championship.
March 11, 2007: Kansas rallied from 22 points down 32-10 to beat Texas once-again 88-84 and win the Big 12 Tournament Championship. Kansas was selected as the #1 seed in West Region for the NCAA Tournament.
March 11, 2007: N. Carolina defeats in-state rival N. C. State 89-80 to win the ACC Tournament Championship. UNC was selected as the #1 seed in the East Region of the NCAA Tournament.
March 11, 2007: UCLA the regular-season PAC 10 Champion for the second-straight season was selected as the #2 seed in the West Region. Duke was the #6 seed and Kentucky was the #8 seed in the West Region.
March 15, 2007: Duke lost in the opening round of NCAA Tournament losing to Virginia Commonwealth 79-77. The Devils finished the 2006-07 season 22-11 also losing 4-straight games. Duke snapped a 9-year streak of Sweet 16 appearances. The Devils also lost star forward Josh McRoberts who decided to skip his last 2 years of college eligibility and declare for the NBA Draft.
March 18, 2007: Kentucky lost to "Phat 5" member Kansas 88-76 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. UK finished the 2006-07 season 22-12.
March 22, 2007: Kentucky head-coach Tubby Smith resigns and is named the new coach of the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Smith guided UK for 10 seasons winning the 1998 NCAA Championship.
March 23, 2007: The 50th Anniversary of the first "Phat 5" vs. "Phat 5" match-up in NCAA history. N. Carolina beat Kansas 54-53 in the only 3OT Championship game. Kansas was led by sophomore sensation Wilt Chamberlain who would later become the most dominant force in NBA history.
March 24, 2007: "Phat 5" vs. "Phat 5" Kansas lost to UCLA 68-55 in the Elite 8 round of East Region. Kansas was the most dominant of the 4 top seeds heading into the Sweet 16. Kansas finished the 2006-07 season 33-5. The Jayhawks will be a favorite to win the 2008 National Championship.
March 24, 2007: UCLA advanced to the Final Four making it 20-consecutive Final Four appearances for "The Phat 5." The Bruins made it back-to-back visits to the Final Four becoming the first "Phat 5" program since Kansas in 2002 and 2003 to do so.
March 25, 2007: N. Carolina lost to the Georgetown Hoyas 96-84. The Tar Heels had a 10-point lead with 3:00 minutes remaining but was unable to hold-off the Hoyas. UNC finished the 2006-07 season 31-7. The Heels will also be a favorite like Kansas to win the NCAA Championship. It was also the 25th Anniversary of the 1982 NCAA Championship match-up won by UNC 63-62 on a 17ft. jump-shot by a freshman named Michael Jordan.
March 31, 2007: UCLA lost to Florida for second year in row at the Final Four. The Gators dominated the Bruins and won 76-66. Florida beat UCLA last year for the National Championship 73-57. UCLA finished the 2006-07 season 30-6. The Bruins will again be in the mix for the 2008 National Championship.
April 2, 2007: Roy Williams the head-coach of N. Carolina was enshrined into the Basketball Hall of Fame. The 1966 Texas Western team was also enshrined. The Miners beat heavily favorite Kentucky 72-65. It will be forever known as "The Game That Changed College Basketball." The all-black starting five of Texas Western vs. all-white starting five of Kentucky game won by the Miners changed college basketball recruiting in the more segregated south.
Billy Donavan the 2-time winning NCAA Championship coach of the Florida Gators has been offered the Kentucky coaching job. Donavan was an assistant at UK from 1990-94 is the most coveted coach for the winningest program of All-Time.
